A garden is more than just a place to grow flowers (and in some cases, food!) It’s a sanctuary. Our own little slice of calm and a place where we can enjoy time with family and friends outdoors. Now that Summer is here your garden may require more care than usual to keep your plants healthy and happy when the weather is hot and dry. If your garden is neglected, it will start to show in your plants, lawn and flowers. Here we share some simple ways to help your garden looking colourful and stay in good health.

Pots, Containers and Window Boxes

Look after your pots, containers and window boxes as they’re likely to need a deep soaking of water everyday, especially if you have annuals and perennials.

Control Evaporation

One of the best ways to control evaporation is with mulch. Mulch will help retain moisture and keep the soil cool, so you can grow plants that do not require a lot of water. Mulch also helps reduce weeds, which means it’s easier for you to maintain your garden without having to weed as frequently.

Water your Plants Correctly

We have said it before and we’ll say it again for those at the back…Your garden will thank you for watering in the coolest part of the day, and not just because it saves water. Watering in the evening helps prevent evaporation during the hottest part of the day and also keeps your plants healthy. If possible, avoid watering in full sun; instead, wait until evening when temperatures are cooler and less likely to burn your plants’ pots.

Remember that your garden is an extension of your home and should be treated like one. If you keep it well-maintained it will pay you back by looking happy and glorious.
